Residents are being given the first chance to view the South Devon Link Road at a special event to be held next month.
The Community Open Day on 25th July 2015 will give locals the opportunity to visit the construction site and walk along a stretch of the new road, months before traffic will be permitted to drive on the road.
Between 10am and 4pm, a significant stretch of the road will be open to the public so they can view progress so far.
This special preview may be the only chance that people have to walk along the road, as the new dual carriageway will not be suitable for pedestrians.
The project team behind the road wanted to give the community this unique chance as a way of thanking them for their support and patience throughout the construction process.
Although the road is not scheduled for completion until December 2015, it has been decided to hold the community event now to give people the chance to walk the route before it opens to traffic. Many of the main construction elements will be complete by the end of July, however significant elements remain including the opening of the flyover later this year.
Councillor Andrew Leadbetter, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Economy and Growth, said: “This is a really exciting preview event and I hope the community take this chance to view the road on foot ahead of the opening.
“It’s been a hugely complex project and although we are proud of the way we’ve continued to maintain traffic flow whilst construction has taken place, we recognise the disruption it has caused to residents and motorists at times – now it is time to say thank you by giving local people the opportunity to visit the site.”
Mayor of Torbay, Gordon Oliver said: “The South Devon Link Road is nearly complete – I’m sure that many people will choose to apply for tickets for the event on 25th July and see the progress for themselves. This is a unique opportunity to walk on the new road before it opens to traffic and we expect high demand for tickets, so we advise people to apply quickly.”
Chris Hastings, Project Director at Galliford Try, said: “We’re really pleased that we can offer this opportunity to local people – it’s a real milestone for the community and will allow us to showcase our progress so far.”
Entry is strictly limited– over 2000 tickets have been made available and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Ticket numbers have been restricted as the area is still very much a construction site, therefore the number of people on site at any time needs to be controlled.
Free tickets will be available from the Herald Express from 1st July: please visit the Herald Express website for further details www.heraldexpress.co.uk/southdevonlinkroad A limited number of tickets are also available for Kingskerswell residents direct from The Garden Gate shop, Fore Street, Kingskerswell from 1st July.
The event is being sponsored by South Devon College and Kitsons Solicitors. It is also being supported by the Herald Express and Colour Digital Print.
This Community Open Day is happening in addition to the Colour Road Rush event on 1st August, which aims to raise money for the Rowcroft Hospice. For more information about the Colour Road Rush event please visit: http://tinyurl.com/odq8rgc
